American writer, journalist and wit Mark Twain won a worldwide
audience for his stories of the youthful adventures of Tom
Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn.
Born Samuel Langhorne Clemens in 1835 in Florida, Missouri,
he spent his childhood in the small Mississippi river town
of Hannibal, Missouri. After his father's death in 1947 he
became a printer, setting type in Iowa, New York City, Philadelphia
and other cities. He then worked as a Mississippi river-boat
pilot until the outbreak of the American Civil War. In 1861
he served briefly as a soldier in the Confederate army. Later
that year he moved to Nevada and began writing articles as
a newspaper reporter.
In 1863 Mark Twain was born when he began writing his articles
under that pseudonym. In 1870 he married Olivia Langdon and
they later moved to Hartford, Connecticut. Some of his most
famous books followed shortly after this: The Adventures of
Tom Sawyer (1876), The Prince and the Pauper (1882) and A
Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court (1889).
His masterpiece The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884)
remains one of the outstanding works of American literature.
Later works included Puddn'head Wilson (1894). He died in
1910.
